Program Benefits Non school hours represent the single largest block of time in the lives of American children and youth.
Young people's participation in constructive learning activities during non-school hours contributes substantially to their success in school.
Children's participation in organized after-school programs has positive impacts on educational achievement.
In addition to educational achievement, children experience multiple benefits from high quality after-school programs. These benefits include improvements in students' social skills, work habits, emotional adjustment and peer relations, and more constructive choices about personal behavior.
Teenagers as well as younger children benefit from participation in after-school programs exhibiting better academic and social outcomes, as well as higher education and career aspirations.
After-school programs help to reduce youth crime. Between the hours of 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm is when violent juvenile crime triples. Children also face the danger of becoming victims of crime. Public support for the expansion of after-school programs is widespread. These programs show great promise in the promotion of children's learning, development, and success.
